Nintendo posts strange Close to You video, sending fans into a tizzy

What could the mystery baby be all about in Nintendo’s new short?

Nintendo isn’t immune to posting strange video teasers. Last year they creeped us out with teasers for Emio: The Smiling Man, and this year they did something similar with Pokemon Legends. Now, the company has dropped a sweet, albeit mysterious, clip titled Close To You. And fans are losing their minds.

The clip focuses on a baby left alone when her mom heads to answer the door. Somehow the child’s pacifier comes alive, hopping around the room while the girl follows it, before it gets stuck in her mobile. There are no notes or descriptors in the video, just the name of the clip itself. But what is it for?

Well, with NYCC later this week it’s worth noting that Nintendo chose to use the event to drop the first Super Mario Bros Movie teaser so many years ago. The child bears a striking resemblance to Super Mario Galaxy’s Rosalina, right down to the hairstyle and color, and the color of her outfit. There are a lot of stars in the video in different places, but perhaps the clouds on the mobile are more interesting because they’re very similar to the clouds found in the Super Mario Galaxy game. So, this could be a teaser for the movie, showing Baby Rosalina before she becomes the Space Princess that we all love, with a full trailer arriving later this week.

However, there’s something else that’s odd. The music playing in the video has A LOT of Pikmin built into it. The playful motion of the pacifier as it never quite makes it too far off of the ground could also link it to the little fellas. Could this be a tease for an upcoming Pikmin game? Miyamoto has himself directed a few Pikmin short films and cherishes the series more thanmost of his other work.

Or, could it be a little of both? Could this video be teasing a link between the worlds of Pikmin and Mario? We have a Space Princess, and we know that Pikmin takes place on Earth. Is this how the series come together?

Or, could this just be a cute video that Nintendo wanted to push out, for no reason other than it could?

We’ll likely find out VERY soon.
