Nintendo shares first look at Link and Zelda in its upcoming movie

This is Miyamoto, give me your money and LOOK AT THIS

Nintendo kicked off the week of gaming news by dropping the first official looks at the heroes of its upcoming Legend of Zelda movie. The news, from Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto, follows the Super Mario Galaxy Movie direct last week.

“This is Miyamoto. Filming is underway for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda in a lush, natural setting, with Bo Bragason-san who will play Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san who will play Link.

Filming is on track for the film’s release on May 7, 2027. It will take a while until the release, so we would be grateful if you would wait patiently and look forward to it.”

Bo Bragason’s Princess Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth’s Link are the first two stars announced for the film, which is being filmed in New Zealand. The images are meant to showcase the characters and aren’t necessarily stills from the film — this is just to let us know what they’ll look like.

Link has a muted dark green tunic, with designs similar to Twilight Princess.

More importantly Zelda is dressed in blue, similar to her outfit in Breath of the Wild. This signifies that film may very well be going for a bigger, more adventurous vibe similar to the most recent two games in the series where Zelda was a pivotal character more than just someone kidnapped by Ganon.

Speaking of which, the official synopsis calls him that instead of Ganondorf, which could lead to the assumption that he may be more of his demonic form than a Gerudo, or some hybrid of both.

“A live-action adaptation of the video game franchise. ‘The Legend of Zelda’ follows Link, a young warrior destined to protect the magical kingdom of Hyrule from the forces of darkness. The land is under threat from Ganon, a ruthless warlord who seeks the Triforce-an ancient relic said to grant limitless power. To stop him, Link must embark on a perilous journey, battling monstrous creatures, exploring treacherous dungeons, and solving intricate puzzles to uncover sacred artifacts that can aid him in his quest.”

Whew! It sure sounds like Zelda!

This all follows leaks over the weekend of some of the on-set filming, which may even show an important lore character in the mix, too. Spoilers, so scroll down to see.

Anyhoo, sign us the heck up. This is setting the vibe that we wanted from the film, so we’ll be there day one in May 2027.
