Slime Rancher 2 is like eugenics, but also adorable?
Monomi’s latest game, the full release of Slime Rancher 2, mixes elements of farming and ranching and does so with a a gooey hook.
The slimes are the stars of the game, with our goal of growing, pairing and managing them, and eventually making new ones through combinations based on what we need to go farther and what we just want to see. We have to feed and maintain the slimes we collect, and understand how to keep them together and happy. Some might hop, so we might need a fence. Some might fly, so we need a ceiling. And then when we begin to breed them together we might want to combine the bunny slime with the flying slime for a solid mix that has its own needs.
But that’s just part of the experience. There’s also a lot of exploration and walking around, and plenty of puzzles to keep us moving forward. There are a lot of different areas we can unlock that can facilitate certain slimes, and it’s gated in a way to where things slowly unlock but can also get to a point where it can be a little overwhelming.
And there are a lot of hard decisions that we have to make, where we’re think, “man, my little cat guys, they’re not giving me as much money as they used to.” And then we have to decide that we’ll fuse them with some other slimes to improve them. Then when we do, we find out that they’re also not worth that much. So the only way to get rid of them and start over may be to start shooting them off into water and killing them, which is really difficult if we’ve started getting attached to them.
And we will. We’ll get attached to these little slimes that are cute and colorful in this cute and colorful world, and then we have to kill them. It’s wildly morbid, but at the same time it’s also adorable, leading to just a strange combined feeling when we’re faced with it.
That may be the best way to describe the game, actually. This game is cute, the characters are all cute, but absolutely do not get attached to any of them because, well, oops you just did.
