New stars join the cast in Mario’s next movie
Nintendo has dropped a bunch of new info, and the first trailer, for its upcoming and highly anticipated Super Mario Galaxy Movie. During today’s movie-focused Direct Nintendo’s Miyamoto was joined by Illumination’s Chris Meledandri to debut the trailer and announce new cast members.
The trailer, embedded below, takes place soon after the first film, with Bowser still shrunk down and in captivity after eating a mini-mushroom. He seems to be buddies with Luigi but there’s definitely some fresh ire between he and Mario, to a level of which we really haven’t seen before in a Mario work. There’s a heavy painting theme, with the now standard Magic Paintbrush in possession of Bowser Jr, who’s on his way to rescue his dad. This leads to the team heading into space, through different worlds (the first trailer depicted underwater one and an almost Arrakis-like) and eventually draws in Rosalina.
There’s no mention of Yoshi though, who has leaked extensively in marketing materials since earlier in the year and as a literal Easter egg in the credits of the first film.
The role of Rosalina is being played by Nintendo super fan and Oscar winner Brie Larson (maybe this will lead to her taking the role in an eventual Metroid film?) and Actor/Director Benny Safdie as Junior. He directed Uncut Gems, which is incredible, and The Smashing Machine, which is, um, yeah.
The majority of the cast of the first film is returning, though we don’t know if that will include Donkey Kong or not.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie arrives in April 2026 exclusively in theaters.
