Demonschool review: Tactical perfection

It’s impossible to get bored with Demonschool’s board

Demonschool is almost like a tabletop game. It’s an RPG, and it’s a tactics RPG, but not specifically one in the classical sense. It’s more akin to something that requires planning strings of actions and moves well ahead than singular turns, making it almost like chess in a way. Well, chess with demons.

The premise behind the game is that we’re students in a school that has to contend with a whole demon thing. Our main character Faye has been trained in demonology, which her whole family has in their line, and can not only take on enemies but also do some lite hooking up with classmates. It’s a thing!

The action is turn based, but movesets are important. Each character has a unique set of abilities that are strategic on the board. One character is a healer that can’t attack, for instance, so we need to set up our team on the board in a specific way to protect them. Other chararcters can push or pull, some are really good at fighting and some have range abilities. All of that sets up a great combo system that requires us to have our teammates work off of each other, like pushing an enemy towards one of our fighters who can take it down with a specific move. We have to plan it all out ahead of time, so that it runs in a sort of domino-effect chain reaction, and if we’re not happy with how things are turning out then we can rewind and make adjustments.

Demonschool has a unique and really enjoyable gameplay system that makes it engaging. It’s an easy recommendation for RPG fans and modern lite horror fans, and is easily one of my favorite games, arriving at the end of last year.
