Guild Wars 2 Visions of Eternity review: Still going strong

Guild Wars 2 has been around for a long time, and with this latest expansion it shows why it’s still so very good.

With its inherent design, Guild Wars 2 encourages us to keep coming back. Weapons and items and skills we grind hours and hours and days and weeks for never fall off in power, making it feel like the developers really value all of the time we put in. This latest expansion, Visions of Eternity, continues that respect but within a new robust story.

There have been island-based story expansions for MMORPGs before, and while they’ve been enjoyable they also tend to feel very similar. ArenaNet worked a darker plot full of castaways and magic into their island adventure, and it makes for a stronger plot than we expect. The team has also updated skills and abilities, which extend the different classes we’ve been playing with well, but the aspect that maybe pulls is in the most is the updates to the mounts. Mounts play out differently in GW2; they’re not just things we ride, they also have some unique skillsets of their own, allowing us to do a bunch of different things in the world. In Visions of Eternity the devs have updated the Aquatic Skimmer mount with better attacks and a sort of echolocation sonar that lets us find treasures. It may seem minimal in the grand scope but it actually goes a long way into keeping us engaged and doing things.

I may be preaching to the choir about Guild Wars 2‘s latest expansion. Those who play the game already have it and probably have dozens if not hundreds of hours in it already. But for those who havent been dipping into the game lately, or are maybe sick of World of Warcraft, Visions of Eternity is a pretty awesome starting point.
