A fun, almost boardgame like train puzzle game themed around Halloween, Dali enjoys his time with the delightful game.
Spooky Express threw me for a bit of a loop, not because of any difficulty spikes but because of how quickly addicting the game can become. The game, a classic “pipeline” puzzle experience, doesn’t have a whole ton of depth but it isn’t supposed to.
In it we need to plan train tracks around a board, connecting one end to another, to bring passengers to the exits or hit specific goals, avoiding vampires and zombies and other obstacles in our way. It’s really just a series of nice, clean puzzles that we need to solve, routing the train up and down and around a board. There are times when we might want to draw the paths on a sheet of paper to solve them (I did!) but that almost adds to the little bits of joy and “A-HA!” moments when we figure out the path.
The game is very much a WYSIWYG experience in that we know right away what it’s about, but because it’s non-invasive and enjoyable in its premise and has spot-on execution, it’s a delight to run through.
