The OG Pokemon remakes come back for the 30th celebration
We all wondered about when the original Pokemon games would be available again. They were classics, eventually making the jump to the Nintendo 3DS’s Virtual Console at one point. While we loved our Game Boy iterations, it really was the GBA remakes that we wanted, considering how big the quality of life improvements were. They brought both visual and control upgrades, as well as new features, all built off of the Sapphire & Ruby engine.
Some say that Pokemon has come a long way since then, while others pine for going back, but at least now we’ll get that chance.
For Pokémon’s 30th anniversary The Pokemon Company and Nintendo have revealed that the GBA’s FireRed and LeafGreen are finally making the jump to consoles, launching as download-only on February 27th — Pokemon Day 2026.
Load up those gift cards though, as the 20+ year old games will land for $19.99 each.
As an added bonus, the full soundtracks for the two games are also now available on the Nintendo Music app. Those were bops!
