Sunsoft has given us the game version of “If I haven’t seen it, it’s new to me.”
City Hunter is a top shelf example of late 80s/early 90s anime action, so of course it was a prime contender for a video game on the NES.
Which we didn’t get.
Instead we got City Hunter on the PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16 to us here in North America), though it’s never officially reached our shores — until now.
The game an interesting design that’s part 2D Metroid and part Elevator Action, and is actually pretty fun to play even though it feels so un-City Hunter overall. But, that doesn’t really hurt the game, it just pushes it into a suprising direction.
This “remastered edition” brings QOL updates like save states and rewind, as well as concept art and scanlines that we’ve come to expect from this type of release.
City Hunter is a game that’s easy to recommend if early 90s games and anime are an intersection that is headed towards our tastes. And, by the by, it provides an excellent presentation with enough things to get us interested in both the game and the anime it’s based on, even if we’ve never heard of it.
