But are things getting cheaper, or more expensive
Nintendo today announced that going forward first party Switch 2 exclusive games will be given variable pricing based on if being sold physical or digital.
The pricing starts in May, with the example given that of the upcoming Yoshi and the Mysterious Book being priced $59.99 digitally through the eShop and $69.99 in physical format.
This seems to be regional, as prices for the game in different countries are across the board and don’t line up to the same dual pricing (yet).
While this may seem like a sweet way to save ten bucks on a game, it’s worth noting that it now pushes Yoshi to a $70 game on par with Donkey Kong Bananza. Nintendo has stated that it will price games according to the value they provide, not the time it takes to develop them or the content within.
Though it’s been a bit of a meme over the years, it now almost feels like Nintendo is either taxing itself for going physical or finding ways to charge more for games. And it also puts a deeper nail in the coffin of preservation.
This is currently not retroactive, either, so don’t think you can snag a few bucks off of Kirby Air Riders if you didn’t pick it up yet. It also means that your Switch 2 is going to need more storage, of which pricey Micro SD Express cards are the only option.
Whew. Come to think of it, with the need to buy bigger storage capacities for the games it’s actually even more expensive to go digital on the Switch 2.
BIG YIKES FOR THOSE OF US ON BUDGETS.
