A noisy show floor may not seem like the optimal place to play baseball, but it’s definitely the optimal place to show off our digital home run skills.
At IGN Live this year, Backyard Sports had a short demo set up for Backyard Baseball based on their home run derby mode. While every baseball game has one, the realism of home rub derbies can be a bit off putting. I’ve always preferred Wii Sports’ simple baseball mode because it felt (almost) 1-to-1 for how we interact with the bat and ball. Without motion controls that’s kind of gone away.
Backyard Baseball, being a goofy, kid-based iteration of the sport that’s rebuilt from the original games, manages to recapture some of that charm and lightheartedness of what simplified baseball can be. At least based on the demo. Which I used to proved my muscle.
First of all, the mode is extremely simple: we just tap a button to swing the bat. The strategy comes in swinging the bat at the right time to hit the ball and send it far out over the backyard fence or shed or into a neighbor’s yard. It’s a real accessible bit of gameplay — we’re JUST tapping one button — but it feels quite satisfying; the developers have given this teeball bat a little bit of in-game weight, adjusting its speed to mimic kids lifting up a heavier piece of lumber or aluminum on a baseball diamond.
These are five-year-old kids that are meant to be playing in these games, but the dev team have juiced it enough where there actually is some level of strategy and technicality that we want out of this. It’s definitely AIMED at kids, too, but it seems like it can get surprisingly deep if we decide to go that route.
The game’s release falls within the perfect timing of all the other revivals of things that affected us Nineties kids. The lines at IGN Live (and even PAX East before it) were unexpectedly huge, and it must be exciting for the development team to see how people have actually responded.
For myself, at least, I’ll dig out those digital cleats when the game launches this Summer.
This preview was based on a session at IGN Live 2026.
