Square Enix announces the next Final Fantasy game

Back to the Super NEStalgia well we go, and that’s A-OK

Final Fantasy isn’t going anywhere any time soon. After revealing Final Fantasy VII Revelation on Friday, and with FFXIV Online on the way to Switch later this year, Square Enix took a few minutes during today’s Nintendo Direct to reveal that it has yet another new game in the works.

Final Fantasy Resonance is the first HD-2D game in the series, giving us that glorious 16-bit era vibes with a lot of modern lens flare. The game is based on the first story arc of the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and will feature the ability to call on characters from across FF games to aid in battle and story.

It’s that classic turn-based battling with a slew of updates that weren’t in the mobile game, plus the addition of a giant overworld and airships and chocobos. It’ll have a bunch of new story elements and aspects from across the now-shuttered mobile game’s arcs, for a pretty packed experience, much like what the company did with last year’s Octopath Traveler 0 being loosely based on its own mobile game.

I personally never had the chance to play the mobile game, so this is a great way for someone like me to finally get that fantastic chance.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026 for Switch, Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series and PC.
