Backyard Baseball review: Hey, remember Pablo Sanchez?

Backyard Baseball review: Hey, remember Pablo Sanchez?

Backyard Baseball is running fully on nostalgia, but that fuel isn’t necessarily enough to keep the motor on.

PC gaming was different in 1997. You could buy PC games at the grocery store. They weren’t good most of the time but PC gaming had only two options, Low End or Tech God. For the most part the computer existed in a spot in your house and you went to it, not complaining about quality just happy about quantity. Backyard Baseball (The Original) was one of those games that didn’t ask too much of the beige rectangle that tied up the phone line, and gave back exactly what it looked like it would: a kids’ sports game.

Now the 2026 release of Backyard Baseball is an interesting product. The franchise was created to be an easy going schoolyard baseball game for children. Those children are adults now. Gaming is in a completely different place and the computer lives wherever it wants to and the kids that would be consumed by Backyard Baseball have a device in their backpack that can play anything. And for the most part consoles are starting to exist that way too. This Backyard Baseball can probably run on anything. It looks cute, it has basic swings and pitches and some neat but short modes. And that’s it. It’s really What You See Is What You Get.

This isn’t a bad game by any stretch of the imagination but I can’t figure out exactly who it’s for. All of the marketing is really geared at the “hey remember Pablo Sanchez?” crowd and not the “hey kids, come play an easy-going cartoon game of baseball” demographic. At best I see the “parents playing with kids” crowd being big, which I find wholesome and sweet. But as it stands it’s just a decent enough nostalgia hit that doesn’t bring anything new to the plate and mostly lives online in a purgatory of streamers pogging at the scene because they recognize all the characters.

Pablo Sanchez, at least.
