LIFTED review: Throwback platforming mayhem

There’s a lot to like in LIFTED, even if its gameplay is a little uninspired.

You immediately grab my attention when you tell me your game is the idea of a former Disney Imagineer. Of course I’m gonna take a peek.

LIFTED decided it was gonna be a game most don’t borrow from and that’s Rayman 1. I love it. The gimmick of LIFTED is that it is an 80s tribute to classic time travel stories. A little Back To The Future, a little Bill and Ted, even a little Doctor Who craft a charming world where a goober and his eccentric scientist mentor get caught up in a time traveling heist using the Anytime Elevator where every floor is a different time in history.

A lot of love and care went into creating this story and these characters, and you can tell that this is where the real passion is. I’m not saying the gameplay is bad; it’s serviceable. It is a means to an end, transporting this story to us. It’s just kinda uninspired, and feels like the developers could have had more fun with some of the mechanics — but it never really grows beyond that Rayman 1 homage. I don’t think that should put someone off to it though.

Overall my time with these characters was very much enjoyed regardless of how I feel about the mechanics.
