J.J. shares some of his favorite video game soundtracks in his album collection
FFVII: This is a two album best of kinda thing on picture discs. I’m not a big fan of picture discs, sound quality takes a hit. But that doesn’t matter here because it’s just the presentation that is soooooo good. One album represents the original game and the other is the remake. Great little release.
Sonic CD: What can I say, I love me some Sonic and this is a great soundtrack and one of the albums sides doesn’t even have music on it, just nice little artwork etched into the record itself. Love to see it. Beautiful blue color.
Castlevania SotN: Nothing special about this other than the color and the album art and the fact that it is one of the absolute best soundtracks of all time
Sega Mega Drive Ultimate Collection: This is a preorder incentive from Australia for the game of the same name and is the first video game soundtrack on vinyl I ever bought. It called to me and I hit up eBay and it activated the latent Video Game OST Gene inside me.
Portal: This is a fun one. It’s a trick album cover that can open either way and depending on how you open it changes which album is given to you. It’s on brand for Portal and it’s just a delight.
Katamari Damacy: My favorite in the collection. Just one of the greatest soundtracks ever produced on EXTREMELY bright vinyl and is the one in my collection I have people hitting me up on Discogs all the time for trying to buy, lol.
Hero of Time (Music from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time): Probably my most listened to vinyl soundtrack. I love this album. Beautiful renditions of OoT tracks by the Slovak National Symphony and arranged and composed by Eric Buchholz. Could not suggest this album enough.
Quake: It’s the Quake soundtrack. By Nine Inch Nails. On Vinyl. That’s really all you need to know. Undoubtedly one of the coolest soundtracks ever produced for a game.
Mortal Kombat I & II: There’s not much to say here. I’m including it because I love that it has THE song your thinking of when you think of Mortal Kombat and it also just looks really cool. Clear with green accents intended to look like Reptiles acid. Lovely.
Switched On SNES Albums: Cheat time here to include two but these are just sick. Analog synth and drum machine renditions of Link to the Past and Secret of Mana. Just killer content to put on and go about your day to.
Snatcher: I love Kojima and Snatcher being mostly unavailable in English these days here in any legit way means I’ll take whatever I can get and a beautiful release of the soundtrack on clear vinyl with blood splatter accents is definitely one of those things I’ll jump at.
