Truxton Extreme review: Nostalgic perfection shmupping

The developers behind Truxton Extreme have somehow beautifully captured the best essences of classic SHMUPs, and J.J. is frothing at the mouth to talk about it!

I don’t know who decided that after almost 35 years we needed a brand new Truxton game but I’m deeply in love with them.

Truxton is, simply put, Toaplan doing exactly what they do best and that’s SHMUPS. A beautiful big and loud vertical scrolling shooter and one of the best to ever do it. The original is an arcade classic that resulted in another arcade all-timer in Truxton II in 1992. Then that was it. Toaplan became defunct two years later.

Masahiro Yuge, a veteran of Toaplan that worked on all of their best, founded developer Tatsujin with a plan in mind to save every Taoplan game, and Truxton Extreme is part of that — and they nailed it.

Tatsujin could have just slapped fresh paint on the old games and called it a night but they didn’t. They made an entirely new game taking the best elements from both originals and to create an absolutely phenomenal classic arcade shmup that is a must play for anybody with even a passing interest in the genre.
