This Week in Netflix: May 10th to May 17th

We here at SideQuesting are nerds. Nerds aren’t only into video games, they can also be movie nerds, music nerds and sports nerds. This is common knowledge, but my nerdity will once again be helpful to you. Grand Poobah Dali gave me permission to write a weekly post rounding up the best upcoming and expiring titles on Netflix Instant. Everyone that has Netflix knows some of the movies are hits, but many of them are just filler meant to pad out their numbers.

I will go through each weeks releases and post movies hitting that I like or were a critical/commercial success. Important note to my international friends: Sorry folks, this is US Netflix only.

Two weeks in a row, there won’t be many coming to the service (or so we think). This week, I will touch upon several titles that were added in 11th hour deals and hit the service at the end of last week. Thankfully, not many movies will be leaving Instant this week either. Check after the break for all of your Instant Watch needs!

Last Week Adds

Death Note – If you are a fan of anime, then you have probably already watched this. If you are a fan of anime and haven’t watched this, you are doing yourself a huge disservice. Death Note is a fantasy in which the lead character ‘Light’, happens upon a journal in which he can write any name he chooses, and that person will die in whatever manner he pencils in. ‘L’, a mastermind of law enforcement is Light’s opposition; and the story is a tango that must be watched to be understood.

Mortal Kombat – Considered by many to be the best video game to movie adaptation, Mortal Kombat is a good action-adventure movie that won’t disappoint you as much as anything directed by Uwe Boll. The story is nonsense, but if you like the games, there are plenty of the characters in this movie. It’s more relevant now, with the latest release in the game series, if nothing else.

Sgt. BilkoGood, clean comedies are hard to come by these days. Sgt. Bilko stars the ensemble cast of Steve Martin, Dan Akroyd, Phil Hartman, Chris Rock in a stupid comedy about the titular character, Master Sergeant Ernest G. Bilko, and his motor pool on a small US Army base. Trying very hard to do very little is Bilko’s way of things, and his exploits make for a fairly comedic film.

Biloxi BluesIt is 1945 and Eugene Morris Jerome (Matthew Broderick) is drafted into the US Army. Eugene is set in the care of the strange drill sergeant Toomey (Christopher Walken) at boot camp in Biloxi, Mississippi. While it may not be entirely accurate, it does set the tone of the World War II era fairly well. If you are looking for a comedy that is a little different, check it out.

Upcoming Release

Nope, not plural, because the only thing being added this week is:

May 15th:

Blue Velvet – I have never been able to write anything about this movie without spoiling it, but I will try again: This movie is an extremely story-driven mystery about a murder. It is a great movie, go watch it.

I think I pulled off the ‘no spoilers’ bit.

Nearly Sour Milk

I dictate what I watch in my 93 movie queue by what is closest to expiration. If you don’t know what is about to expire, then you may miss some gems. So here are some of the biggest movies that are going to be gone, come next Sunday:

May 11th:

Boyz ‘N the Hood

May 15th:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Check them both out before it is too late!

What’s Popular on Netflix

For the last few days, the most queued movies on Netflix Instant were Kick-Ass, Tremors and Battle of Los Angeles. Kick-Ass and Tremors are understandable, but it seems many people were tricked once again by the movie production company, The Asylum into watching Battle of Los Angeles. The Asylum is a production company that makes movies that parody the title of major releases in an attempt to trick people into watching their version.
