E311: Super Mario 3D (3DS)

Remember that tease back at GDC? The one with the Tanooki tail? Yea, well that is totally coming to 3DS. Nintendo showed a sizzle video today at their press conference, displaying several segments of gameplay.

This being the first Mario game developed for a handheld (3D meaning both in-game dimensions and the eye-popping 3D variety), the controls look to take full control of all of the 3DS’ functionality. The Tanooki suit turns Mario into a Yoshi clone. When jumping he wildly kicks his legs causing him to float through the air in a fairly un-Tanooki fashion.

Switching from a full 3D world to a side-scrolling platformer is another gameplay mechanic that the video touched upon. In many points it looked like the beautiful child of the New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy.

Unable to give a sure date, Miyamoto said that the game would come out before the end of 2011. As the game is still relatively far away from release, details are still scarce. We will update you with any information we receive throughout the week.
