Microsoft and PlatinumGames cancel Scalebound

Waaaaay back in 2014 when Scalebound was first announced, the internet lost its collective minds at the idea of a giant, co-op dragon-wrangling action game. The fact that it was being developed by PlatinumGames — modern masters of the action adventure genre — for Microsoft’s Xbox One was even more of a sign that a game like this could be made right.

Well, now it won’t be made at all.

Microsoft has announced that it is cancelling the project. Though there was never a firm release date for the game, many were hoping that 2017 would be its year. PlatinumGames isn’t generally known for cancelled projects, and Microsoft hasn’t given any reason as to why the project has ended, but the stoppage of work is so immediate that MS is removing all videos and images of Scalebound from its accounts online.

Pour one out for dragon-riding.

Platinum’s next project is the upcoming Nier: Automata.
