Video: Nintendo reveals its Switch commercial for Super Bowl LI

For the second year in a row, Nintendo (or one of its co-owned properties) will have an advertisement during the Super Bowl. Non-mobile phone gaming advertising had all but disappeared from the sporting event until last year’s Pokémon show, capitalizing on retro and nostalgia. For all intents and purposes, the pocket monsters ruled gaming for much of the year.

This time around, Nintendo will be introducing its upcoming Switch console to the masses. Sure, there have been a few presentations and digital streams that the company used to show the device to the press and core gaming world, but the larger audience hasn’t been in the know. Perhaps that will change, as the 30 second video shows a Switch owner playing Zelda in a variety of locations, both portable and on the big screen.

More engaging, however, is the extended version of the ad, which gives a better look at the flexibility of the console through other upcoming games. Will this translate to sales? Well, probably not right away. The Switch’s preorders are basically sold out everywhere so they’ll be difficult to come by during the launch month. However if the ad helps to foster pent up demand then it could be a 1-2 punch for the company to keep interest going. Or rather, a 1-2 Switch.
