HBO reveals new Game of Thrones spinoff House of the Dragon

The rise of the Targaryens

At its HBO Max reveal presentation today ($14.99, kicking off in 2020) the company revealed a monstrous bit of news to close out the event: It has greenlit a Game of Thrones spinoff.

House of the Dragon is based on Fire & Blood, the Song of Ice and Fire book detailing the birth and death of the Targaryen dynasty, and set hundreds of years in the past of the main series. George RR Martin is the series creator, alongside Ryan Condal, who will serve as showrunner with Miguel Sapochnik (director of many of the biggest GoT episodes). The spinoff show was actually revealed back in September, and will eventually culminate in the famous Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war that tore apart the family 100 years before the main series, and ended in the eventual downfall of the line and its ouster from Westeros.

This follows news that it has actually cancelled its Age of Heroes era spinoff produced by Jane Goldman, that would have featured actors like Naomi Watts and had filmed a pilot. No release date has been announced.
