Nintendo reveals major new Super Mario Maker 2 updates

Make full worlds, later this week

In a surprise drop tonight, Nintendo revealed that there’s still one last giant update for its Super Mario Maker 2 game for the Nintendo Switch — and it’s hefty!

First and foremost, the game will now include a world maker mode. This mode lets players create full Mario game experiences a la Super Mario World, complete with overworlds and maps, pipes and item houses, and more. Unique themes, like volcanos, outer space, and snow, allow for worlds to be as creative as desired. Essentially a gam, the entire product can be a full collection of 8 worlds with up to 40 courses.

Here are the rest of the details:

  • A Super Mario Bros 2 mushroom allows Mario to pick up and throw enemies, and even create snow balls on snow & ice levels.
  • The Frog Suit is now available as a powerup, so players can hop around to their delight, run across water, and swim flawlessly.
  • Power Balloon and Acorn powerups allow Mario to float and glide in new ways.
  • Boomerang flowers will let Mario throw the weapon around.
  • Other wearable powerups include POW boxes, cannons, Goomba heads, Bullet Bill and propellor boxes, all of which are available only in the Super Mario 3D World themes.
  • The Koopalings are now available as bosses in every style except Super Mario 3D World.
  • Mecha Koopas are even available, and change based on color and time of day.

The big update arrives this week, on April 22, for free.
