A classic Game Boy inspired action adventure with a lot of charm, pirates and parrots, Draco and the Seven Scales is an upcoming new indie that hits a lot of our nostaglia buttons
It isn’t common when a game stops us dead in our tracks, but both J.J. and I did just that when we were perusing the PAX Rising area of PAX West. We’re both suckers for nostalgia fuel, and showcasing a Game Boy styled project is a surefire way to get our attention. Draco had us immediately intrigued, as it mixes Game Boy Zelda with pirates and then pushes what that kind of game could be if its platform has just a little more power.
Draco runs around, gets a ship, takes on enemies in small room-sized puzzles and travels the open seas. The ship portion becomes an integral piece, as Draco not only captains it around but also use its weapons (like cannons) against foes. The demo had us travel around a dungeon in that familiar genre style, overhead view and all, and then slowly things start to shift and change when we get the boat and advance, eventually coming across giant enemies and the strange addition of color.
It feels like a great, extended spin on Game Boy action adventure gaming, and one we’re surely looking forward to.
