Heading under the sea with the hero and their team
I’m ridiculously excited for Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake. While the games themselves were important to my early RPG years, they were still so early in the genre that they weren’t necessarily packed with things to do. The upcoming remake, though, aims to change that a bit.
We absolutely loved what we played at PAX East earlier this year, and that level of detail and Quality of Life upgrades would have been enough, but Square Enix and developers Artdink have decided to add an antirely new area for players to explore and battle in.
Revealed during the Japanese Nintendo Direct, the new area is set fully underwater with the city of Almeha at its center. The area is also home to mermaids, new enemies, treasure vaults and even a ghost ship, and will add much-needed hours and content to the game to help bring the package up to par with last year’s Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake.

With more characters, more enemies, an expanded story and now a whole new area, the original games of the Erdrick Saga look like they’re really coming along. Maybe they’ll include it in a new issue of Nintendo Power?
Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake arrives October 30, 2025.
