World War Z VR [Review]

A potential swan song for big VR, World War Z VR delivers a solid zombie rush experience for virtual reality owners

The game of World War Z VR will feel VERY familiar to someone has played the original title that this is built on (or Left4Dead for that matter, different flavors of the same drink), and I don’t really want to get too deep into the gameplay loop here. It’s single player, we choose our map, choose our dude or dudette, complete some tasks, fight hordes, get to the end of the map and expect some shenanigans along the way to promote replayability. I’m not complaining about that simplicity, it’s very fulfilling.

What I think is most important to talk about here is that VR games can be all over the place and usually limiting with control and movement options. This game is honestly one of the best when it comes to tailoring this experience specifically for ourselves. Sitting or standing, we can have full range of movement, or the angled movements, then can have different types of reload and item management based on the experience we want to have, like Cool Action Guy reloading or more methodical reloads. The guns all feel good, and they have a great sound that definitely feels like we’ll be alerting a horde in our direction if we find a shotgun and start letting loose. I truly respect the real effort that went into giving us these choices.

I’d also not be doing this title justice without mentioning that it’s extremely satisfying to see the 100+ zombie hordes that makes WWZ as an IP stand out adapted into VR. Obviously sacrifices will be made in visual fidelity and unique zombie skins but it’s all small potatoes in the end because the heart of the game is just so satisfying.
