Tron Catalyst review: It’s better than Ares

Tron can have good stories, but maybe not good gameplay

Tron movies are weird. I love the idea of them, I’ve seen all three in theaters, played all the games, watched the series, listen to the music. But I don’t really know if it’s a great medium for storytelling.

Bithell Games is out here to try and prove me wrong. First they released Tron Identity, a visual novel set in the modern Tron timeline that in all honesty is probably the best writing Tron has ever seen. And now we have Tron Catalyst, a time loop isometric adventure set in the same universe. I think the story is still very good, but I’m not entirely sold on the action. I know this isn’t great in a review, but I just can’t explain what the problem is; it’s not broken, but it just lacks any impact in meaningful ways. It feels like it’s there to be there, feeling flat and lacking weight to the attacks. The glitch ability is cool, but I never really felt like I needed it unless the story made us use it. That story is great, the aesthetic and style is spot on, and the soundtrack is sick. At least it has the components for a Tron experience.

Tron Catalyst is by no means a terrible game, but I just don’t know if it’s worth anyone’s time if they’re not a Tron fan. In fact, I don’t think really it’s worth Tron’s time either.
