Project Helix is the all-in-one PC, console and entertainment system
The first NEXT GEN console has been announced-ish! Kind of!
We’ve known that Xbox has been working on their next platform, as former CEO (Hi, Phil!) even said so over the last few years, but now we have some more confirmation on key details.
Back in October, now-former Xbox President Sarah Bond (Hi, Sarah!) was asked in an interview with Mashable about the rumors that Xbox’s next console would be a hybrid PC/TV box. Her response was essentially that the future of the platform would share the thinking behind the ROG Xbox Ally Box Series One X S 2025, which is a handheld Windows-based PC that has a heavy Xbox connection and yet can still jump into other storefronts like Steam and Epic Games.
With the ugly Game Pass reshuffle/rebranding/wallet murder and the shifting goalposts of trying to find out if This Is An Xbox helping lead to the downfall, or should I say “planned retirement” of Phil Spencer and the, uh, planned leave of Sarah Bond, it was curious to see what would happen to Xbox and its strategies.
Well, NEW Xbox CEO Asha Sharma today just casually announced that she was working with her team on the next Xbox, now codenamed PROJECT HELIX.
“Great start to the morning with Team Xbox, where we talked about our commitment to the return of Xbox including Project Helix, the code name for our next generation console. Project Helix will lead in performance and play your Xbox and PC games. Looking forward to chatting about this more with partners and studios at my first GDC next week!”
It feels like it’s do or die for Xbox, from at least a physical platform perspective. With chip prices soaring, even holding back the launch of the Steam Machine and presumably the next PlayStation, we’re not getting our hopes up that HELIX will launch any time soon anyways. You’ll have time to save your pennies, and Microsoft will have time to nail down what the divice actually is.
