Robot Entertainment’s latest installment in their orc trapping series, Orcs Must Die! Unchained, is not just a sequel with a few new features, it’s an ongoing evolution of the series.

Orcs Must Die! Unchained is set in the same world fans of the series have come to love and takes place years after the finale of Orcs Must Die! 2.

Traps have always been a core mechanic of the series and it is still true this time around, the difference now is that teams are battling 5v5, trying to lead their army of minions to the safety of the opposing team’s rift. This is the first game in the franchise that has allowed players to control both sides of the action.

The ever-evolving series has taken the basic MOBA trappings and integrated it into their vibrant world of war mages, sorceresses and orcs. Players start by setting traps to fortify their rift as well as the lanes leading inside. Both sides start with two lanes to lead their armies through, while a third lane is waiting to be unlocked during the battle.

Players earn gold and leadership points that can be used to upgrade their weapons, skills and minion armies. Each of the heroes has a unique skill  set, so players can find the hero that best fits their play style and strategy.

The build of the game we played at PAX East was loaded up with heroes already assigned skills and traps, but it’s clear looking at the selection that the options could be endless. This game could be just the thing to get fans of first and third person games into MOBAs.

They have also adopted the free-to-play model for Orcs Must Die! Unchained and based on the Founder’s Program they are currently running, extra gold and additional heroes will be available for purchase. Every player will start off with a hero pack of five and gold can be used to purchase additional card packs and heroes.

The mix of fast-paced, third person game play with the beautiful world and always enjoyable characters could have Robot Entertainment on track for another hit. The game is set to release later this year, but those itching to get in on the action can purchase a Founder’s package and get involved in the alpha today.
