Gamescom: Mario & Sonic’s next Olympic Games outing reveals 2D events

The way it was always meant to be, in glorious 2D

It’s 8-bit vs 16-bit in the newest trailer for Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. SEGA has just dropped a trailer for the upcoming game that reveals all-new (old?) events based on retro flavors. Ten events will be themed using the 8-bit Mario characters and the 16-bit Sonic characters, in addition to the all of the other events that will take place in a more modern 3D HD world.

Here’s the list of 2D events:

  • 100m
  • 10m Platform (Diving)
  • 400m Hurdles
  • Gymnastics – Vault
  • Judo
  • Kayak Single (K-1) 1000m
  • Long Jump
  • Marathon
  • Shooting – Trap
  • Volleyball

And the 3D events:

  • 100m
  • 110m Hurdles
  • 4 x 100m Relay
  • Archery
  • Badminton
  • Boxing
  • Canoe Double (C-2) 1000m
  • Discus Throw
  • Equestrian – Jumping
  • Fencing
  • Football (Soccer)
  • Gymnastics – Floor Exercise
  • Javelin Throw
  • Karate – Kumite
  • Rugby Sevens
  • Skateboarding – Park
  • Sport Climbing
  • Surfing – Shortboard
  • Swimming – 100m Freestyle
  • Table Tennis
  • Triple Jump

The game will feature some characters yet to be announced, as well as new events, split-screen and online modes, and more. The game arrives November 5 in the US, Nov 8 in Europe exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
