Word to your Muggle: Hogwarts Legacy arrives this year

New details and gameplay shown during State of Play

Sony is hosting State(s?) of Play left and right these days, and their latest is for the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy from WB Games. The project, which was initially announced way back in September of 2020, and then sort of went dark over the following year and a half. Now, it’s back, WITH A VENGEANCE, and brings along a release date and first real gameplay.

In the presentation, WB showed off gameplay of the action RPG. Set in the 1800s, long before the time of Harry Potter, players will take control of a new student at Hogwarts who is able to sense some of the most powerful, ancient magic in the school — and those who want to use it to bring down the world of magic.

The game is described as an open-world experience, but it’s really fairly confined to the main school and its surroundings. Players will go to classes, carry out missions, and discover secrets and enemies at every corner. In fact, it feels more akin to the Shadow of Mordor and Far Cry series of games, the latter also created by developer Avalanche, in how players explore and interact with their world and quests. Though it’s set in the past, Potter fans will no doubt recognize a few faces from the series’ lore (there were a LOT of paintings and ghosts in the books and movies, obviously).

Hogwarts Legacy will land on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC this Holiday season.
