Bits & Bytes: Super Mario Bros records, movie trailers, Game of Thrones, Batman, and MORE!

The neverending torrent of CONTENT continues

Just when we thought it was safe to cancel streaming services and start to head outside more to enjoy the weather, they pull us back in, maaaan. It’s been a busy week in the pop culture entertainment world, with plenty of news to continue our love affair with STUFF and CONTENT. Anyhoo, let’s see what news broke this week, eh?

The Super Mario Bros Movie is the biggest video game movie of all time, and currently the biggest movie of 2023, as it’s surpassed $500 million as of Friday. That means that it hit that goal in less than 10 days, and is on pace to potentially hit the $750 million mark within the next couple of weeks — all before it even launches in Nintendo’s home country of Japan. After it’s said and done, the $1 Billion mark is within reach, which I don’t even think the House of Nintendo had projected. Go Mario!

The messy conglomerate that is Warner Bros Discovery has finally, formally revealed that HBO Max will be changing its name to MAX in May, and warping in a ton of new content alongside it.

The Penguin spin-off series (based on The Batman) has a very early production teaser. It’s set to land in 2024 on the streamer.

If you’re a Potterhead, don’t worry: Harry is back. Well, he WILL be once MAX launches the first Harry Potter series. The show will retell Harry’s story and follow the 7 books — and be completely separate from the films.

We knew there were several Game of Thrones spin-offs in the works in various levels of production, and one of them was the much-wanted Dunk & Egg A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series. Well, now it’s fully been greenlit, and it’s coming to MAX in the future (likely well after House of the Dragon Season 2 or 3 have aired). The buddy cop style of the plots has been a favorite of ASOIAF fans, and now we’ll finally see a piece of the missing Targaryen history.

True Detective: Night Country looks like it’s going to get back to some of the things that made the first series so special. Here’s the first trailer, and it’s hitting this year!

The Rick & Morty anime series is hitting MAX & Comedy Central this year, if you’re not worn out yet.

In non WBD/HBO news, Disney treated us to a trailer for the upcoming 2nd season of the fantastic Star Wars: Visions series. Studio Mir, Triggerfish, and even Aardman are involved in this animation anthology, so you can expect some neat takes on the Star Wars universe. It streams May 2nd on D+.

In more Disney-related news, we finally got the first teaser for the upcoming Captain Marvel sequel film, The Marvels, and it looks like absolute fun. Bringing together Captain Marvel, Ms Marvel, and Spectrum, the film will examine the mystery about why they’re all switching places when they use their powers. It’s worth noting that Ms Marvel and Spectrum debuted on Marvel TV series and will make their big screen debut when The Marvels arrives on November 10th.

The Resident Evil: Death Island trailer has landed, and it brings Jill and Leon on screen together! Woohoo! It takes place between RE6 & 7, and though there’s no Western release date planned yet our friends in Japan can check it out in July.

John Wick Chapter 4 is a fantastic film, and may be the wrap-up on the main series (no spoilers!) but that doesn’t mean that the world of Wick is done. As we’ve seen in the films, the assassin world just keeps getting bigger and bigger, and the upcoming series The Continental will take a look at how the famed hotel chain came to be as influential as it is. It arrives on Peacock in September.

We love a good horror flick or two here at SideQuesting, and there are a couple on the way that we have our eyes on. The first is The Last Voyage of the Demeter, which takes place on the fabled ship as Dracula makes his way to London. Things go wrong with a vampire on a boat. Who’d have thunk it?! The movie is out August 11.

Finally, the horror film that looks like it may give us genuine chills is Talk To Me, a movie in which a bunch of teens talk to spirits by holding an embalmed hand. Not weird at all, nope — but VERY spooky. It’s arriving in theaters in July.
