May the GTA be with you in 2026
Rockstar Games has dropped a considerable bombshell today, announcing that the most-anticipated game of all time, Grand Theft Auto VI, won’t make its intended 2025. The game will now launch on May 26, 2026. This is due to the need to get the game polished and good, and that they’re doing their best to avoid crunch.

While that may be a blessing for those trying to carve out space in the fall for their game time, and for developers who want to know when to schedule their releases, it may also inadvertently be a huge gift to Nintendo, whose Switch 2 will likely now be the focal point of the holiday season. Both Microsoft and Sony were banking on Rockstar’s biggest game to bolster their hardware sales this year, so that lack of a tentpole will likely put a huge dent into their already tariff-riddled plans. It could be a rough back half for the games industry.
It could also be a rough month for other aspects of entertainment, as the game will launch just 4 days after Disney’s The Mandalorian & Grogu film hits theaters on the 22nd and an untitled DC film landing on the 29th. There could be a tough 2-3 week span for film and TV.
Oh, and since it’s the end of the school year it could also take its toll on grades as high school & college kids may not be able to pull themselves away from thieving autos grandly to study for their finals.
