Overpower, the comic-based collectible card game, is back! And it still feels just as good to play!
Overpower, the card game, relaunched last year. It was a super 90’s collectible card game that was focused heavily on DC versus Marvel back in a time where we could have DC versus Marvel. It was a much simpler time in card games.
We had a team of four heroes or villains with a third and reserve, and we just kind of fought back and forth with our power cards. It really was buiult on a “who would win” kind of scenario where we had our DC heroes and our Marvel heroes going at it. And it was it was fun. It wasn’t as complex as Magic, which was kind of hitting its peak at that time before it sort of made its resurgence in the last decade, but it was good.
But then it went under for a long time — until these new owners bought it.
Overpower still functions the same way, with heroes and villains trading attacks and abilities. The team at PAX told me that the Marvel and DC cards are backwards compatible, and the new cards can just be put in to play alongside them. Though it’s the same game, some of the rules have slightly changed a little bit but not enough that could make it any more difficult or different to get into, for returning or new fans.
The allure isn’t just the classic sets, either. They’ve partnered with some power houses. There’s going to be Invincible decks. There’s going to be Walking Dead decks. Right now, they just have the the Burroughs fantasy horror stuff, sos it’s a little more Zorro and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. But they’re confident in the future of this thing.
It was just nostalgic seeing it there; I totally had forgotten about Overpower until I saw that logo on the show floor, but I’m glad I did.
SideQuesting had a chance to go hands-on with the project at PAX East. This video first appeared on The SideQuest LIVE for May 13, 2025.
