Into the Unwell is action animation at its most retro crazy
Coffee Stain Studios and developer She Was a Good Horse took to the Summer Game Fest stage to announce their wild new game, Into the Unwell. The rubber hose animation game harkens back to old timey cartoons in which hands and arms and legs went everywhere, usually all at once.
The roguelike uses high contrast colors and a 3D world to have up to three players make their way through a strange underworld? Unwell world? I dunno. It’s a strange world, but it’s cool.
I’ve always loved the style of animation, which originated in the 1920s as cratoonists took their comics and made them move on screens. Back then they were still learning how to translate their flat cartoons into three dimensional bodies in black and white, so making everything overly expressive was important. The style held on for a couple decades, but then Disney did his Disney thing and that was mostly it.

Video games have done a great job of bringing it back, though, and Into the Unwell could help continue ushering in the era of this wacky ass style whenever it launches.
