Hell has frozen over: Halo comes to PlayStation 5 next year

Halo finally follows the players that have mostly abandoned it for PlayStation

We kid, we kid. Kind of. Halo: Campaign Evolved has been announced, a full remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved game that launched alongside the original Xbox 1. This new remake, not to be confused with the remaster that launched in the Master Chief Collection back in 2014, is fully made in Unreal Engine 5 and meant to be a transformative return to the original.

Not only will the game take on the story and world beats of the original Halo, but it’ll also include fresh new prelude content that tells a new story based on Chief & Johnson’s histories, as well as adding updates controls and a whole gosh darn sprint button.

It’ll also focus on the campaign, leaving the PvP for another day. 2-player local and 4-player online co-op will be a big part of the experience, as the dev team has learned much in the years since its release and Halo Infinite.

Maybe the biggest bit of news, though, is that the game will mark the first time the series is coming to PlayStation platforms with its release on PS5. With much of the Xbox 360’s fan base withering down and its players shifting away from the platform towards PlayStation and PC (and Switch, to some extent) the move is an admission of sorts that the Xbox brand isn’t a destination for gamers any more — it now has to chase them where they are and be ready when they go somewhere else.

Halo: Campaign Evolved arrives in 2026 for Xbox, PC and PlayStation 5, all on the same day.
