The Major League Gaming StarCraft 2 Championship was held this past weekend in Providence, Rhode Island. It attracted some of the best players in the world, including many past MLG and GSL winners, all battling it out for a $50,000 first place prize.

Making it to the championship was no small feat; players were either seeded into the championship bracket based on how they had finished in previous MLG events throughout the year, or had to fight their way through an open bracket of over 200 players. This was how eventual champion FXOLeenock had to enter the tournament, as this was the 16 year old South Korean’s first time playing in the MLG after recently making it into Code S from the GSL, arguably the most prestigious StarCraft 2 tournament in the world. He had a crazy run through the open bracket and the start of the winners bracket before being dropped into the losers bracket by a loss to DongRaeGu.

From there he played and beat some of the best competitive StarCraft 2 gamers including SlayersBoxer, previous MLG winners EGIdra, EGHuk, SlayersMMA, IMMvP — who is also a 3 time GSL champion– and MvPDongRaeGu again. All of this to beat yet another previous MLG winner, colNaniwa, in not one, but two best-of-three matches to win the championship. That’s pretty impressive for someone still in high school.

Congrats to FXOLeenock for an incredible run and some amazing games!
