Netflix buys its first game dev, Night School Studio

The acquisition will help Netflix get further into offering games to subscribers

Night School Studio, the developers behind the Oxenfree series and Afterparty, have announced that they’ve been acquired by streaming giant Netflix. The news may come as a slight shock, but in reality Netflix has been dipping its toes into the gaming pool for a while now. There are plenty of game-related IP on the service, as it pushes to become the premiere home for the genre to help it combat the likes of HBO, Amazon, and Disney+. It’s not only produced shows around games, but it has several games based on its shows as well, including Stranger Things and Dark Crystal.

There are even video games already on the service, like Minecraft Story Mode and “Choose Your own Adventure” style takes on Black Mirror and other shows. Earlier this year it had announced that it would begin bringing more games to consumers, kicking off a trial allowing consumers to download a small selection of titles (in a few European territories currently). The news of the purchase points to the company taking the next steps to begin creating its own gaming content. It’s worth noting that Night School Studio was at one point working with Telltale Games on a Stranger Things title before the former collapsed, so they’ll likely fit right in.

While there are no projects to announce yet, nor if they’d be available on other platforms outside of Netflix, Night School Studio has noted that they’re hard at work on all of the content coming to Oxenfree II.
