Find out why it’s a mad world in series prequel Gears of War: E-Day

A young Marcus Fenix is still old

Xbox has finally debuted developer The Coalition’s take on Gears of War, and it looks to sort of reboot the series. During today’s Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, the company revealed that the game is set during Emergence Day, which is the series’ lore that describes the day that the Locust arrive on the planet Sera. The game will feature a younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, as it’s set 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War.

The big push for going to a prequel was to utilize and showcase the latest in Unreal Engine 5. Sure, the familiar 3rd person action shooting will be there, but more storytelling and emotion can be achieved with the use of the tech, so expect moments that are new to the series’ signature style.

Anyhoo, the trailer doesn’t show gameplay, eschewing that for a return to the Mad World soundtrack backdrop and a one-on-one fight between Fenix and an enemy. Gears of War: E-Day looks to release on Xbox, PC and Game Pass in 2025.
