The giant Elden Ring spin-off brings an interesting multiplayer aspect to the Souls-like genre, with a big push into just surviving the night with your friends.
Nightreign is three-player co-op Elden Ring, essentially, where we are corralled around a map, Fortnite style, to basically gain XP and gear during the day. Then during the night we fight a mob and a mini boss, and then you’re back at it into the day again. We do this repetition for two days, when finally on day three we get to take on an actual Big Boss.
That’s the demo that the developers of the game gave us during a hands-off play session at PAX East, focusing on showing us how the typical 40-minute loop will work.
The developers are hoping to catch folks who either missed out on Elden Ring (somehow) or felt the game was far too big for them to get into or stay focused in. In the case of this game, every run starts at zero so that each player has the same level of equipment and development as the others they join with. It’ll be interesting to see if that concept allows people to stick around longer than a few play sessions, since having to restart fresh each time may limit how we connect with a game like this in the first place.
The play session was live, but it was hands-off.

SideQuesting had a chance to watch the game session live at PAX East. This video first appeared on The SideQuest LIVE for May 9, 2025.
