This game isn’t much more than an FPS boomer shooter with classically inspired rubber hose animation visuals, but J.J. loves what all of that adds up to.
MOUSE: P.I. For Hire doesn’t beat around the bush with what kinda game it sets out to be and presents its mission statement immediately and clearly: This is a “boomer shooter” set in a monochrome world of late 20s to early 30s rubber hose animation style cartoons where we play as Jack Pepper (the first of many MANY cheese puns evenly distributed throughout the game) in a very standard noir style parody.
This isn’t a detective game, so do not go into this expecting to turn on Batman’s detective vision to solve a murder. We solve crimes with bullets, solvent and anvils.
As a the sum of its parts it accomplishes everything so well. The animation is beautiful, the humor lands, and the gameplay is just perfectly solid and fast.
It’s a gouda time for all, it’s very funny and will help us if we’re feeling bleu — and it’s well worth our cheddar. Cheese.
Cheddar cheese.
