Saturday Morning Cartoons: Star Fox

Celebrate Star Fox and his crew through their official animations

By now y’all have seen Fox McCloud’s heroic appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and if not — sorry, spoilers! Anyhoo, it’s been a long, long, LOOOOONG time since we had a brand new Star Fox game, with the last technically being Star Fox 2 on the SNES Mini.

While we await any news for a new Star Fox, we thought we’d hop into the animated works of the series, in all the various ways Nintendo promoted it, from cartoons to commercials to puppet shows.

Anyhoo, let’s do a barrel roll and hit the skies!

Star Fox Zero: The Battle Begins was a promotional short Nintendo had made for the game that leads right up to the game’s start. We’ve covered it before on Saturday Morning Cartoons, but it’s worth a second look. Also awesome is the great read up on how Nintendo put the video together, including changing the art style from a typical “gamey” 3D rendering to look more like traditional animation.

What might be more awesome is how Nintendo first introduced the game at E3 in 2015, with a full puppet video during their Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo even had a few novel commercials that used the puppets to promote the game.

Let’s look back on those original Star Fox commercials while we’re at it. These are wild by how much they don’t show an actual fox.

And then Star Fox 64 arrived and blew our minds:

Star Fox made his Gamecube debut with Adventures, and the ads were pretty hype, including the excellent soundtracks.

Star Fox Assault‘s commercials featured… horses and polo?

Star Fox went handheld with Command on the Nintendo DS, featuring touch screen controls and wifi multiplayer combat:

The Star Fox 64 3D advertisements focused on the in-person experience and not really the goofy side of things.

Star Fox 2 never recieved an actual ad, but it did have a preview in Nintendo Power:

Star Fox did make an appearance in the (pretty decent) Starlink game, and debuted with this trailer:

And there was DLC, too!

If you’re okay with spoilers, here are the cinematics from the game featuring the crew:

Finally, while we don’t have any more (official) Star Fox videos, at least we can enjoy the Nintendo Power comic that was, to be honest, pretty amazing.

There were actually plans to make a Star Fox claymation TV series with members of College Humor and Shigeru Miyamoto producing, but it was apparently cancelled when the news about an apparent Netflix Legend of Zelda series was “leaked.”
