Should have been MODERN W4RFARE. Or MODERN WARF4RE. Hire me, Xbox.
It seems like the Call of Duty BLOPS games have been the focus of the series for a few years (surprise, they have been!) but Activision-Blizzard-Xbox is finally returning to its more grounded roots. Modern Warfare 4, developed once again by Infinity Ward, eschews the sci-fi stuff that took over BLOPS and gets us back into today times, focusing on war in the Korean Peninsula. In this story North Korea has invaded South, taking over major cities. It’s up to us to save the world again. Maybe? Or at least just get things back to a semblance of stability.
In the debut trailer released today the game depicts the war, with players taking control of characters in three different factions during the campaign. The game is made to be faster, with players getting new movesets and the ability to vault over obstacles as they manage the terrain in front of them. These aren’t crazy enhanced abilities, rather just ways we might actually move when running through fire.
The game will bring multiplayer, campaign and the return of the extraction-based DMZ modes. The campaign itself will have players moving as different characters across the three battle lines: a grunt in the South Korean army, Captain Price, who is trying to win back his freedom, and a North Korea soldier. From an actual shooting standpoint two of the big changes seem to be real bullet trajectory and weapon enhancements, so actually aiming and pew pewing will be way more realistic (and hopefully fun).
Finally, the game is leaving the older platforms and arriving on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC and the long awaited return to Nintendo platforms with the Switch 2 on October 23rd.
