The Next Nintendo: Ten Things That We Want To See

You know that the next Nintendo console is coming.  You know what (we think) we know.  You also know what’s left to be answered about the rumors.

But there’s something even more important than what we already (think we) know: What we want to see out of Nintendo’s next system.  Hopefully you, like us, have had some deep, metaphysical time with yourselves to imagine the possibilities.

First things first: I hate top ten lists.  I need to add that in as a disclaimer, because I’m creating a list right now.  However, I’ve found that unless information isn’t bullet-pointed it tends to look like a wall of text that isn’t very interesting to follow for the basement-dwellers.  Hopefully, this one time occurrence will leave you wanting to punch Nintendo for their last few years of avoiding you, and raise the bar so high that they can’t possibly achieve it, resulting in a ZOMGFAIL of sales and expectations.

I AM EXCITE.

#1. Zelda: Skyward Sword in HD

Yeah, I know that the current next Zelda game is pegged for the Wii sometime this Fall, but wouldn’t it be oh-so-sexy to have a second version of the game release a year later, in HD visuals and featuring Navi and Tingle on the separate controller’s screen?  Heck, maybe even devoid of motion controls all together?  Yes, it’d be THAT GOOD.

#2. A Social Nintenwork

Screw Friend Codes.  Forget about the over-simplicity of Xbox Live.  I want to see myself sharing pictures, scores, coins, videos of playthroughs, and in-game video chat with friends and stalkers alike.  I want to always want to be on Nintenwork, regardless of if I’m playing a game or not.

#3. Blu-Ray

… and Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and anything else that I can view on my TV (or controller screen, for that matter).  It’s the age of media, and we want to consume it as much as possible.

#4. Compatibility with the 3DS

The 3DS already has a decent WiFi spec, motion controls, and even a 3D screen.  If I have a 3DS, I should be able to use that instead of the controllers that come packaged with the device.  The 3D screen alone could be a great addition if Screen Stream is a reality.  Imagine playing the Next Nintendo’s games streamed to the 3DS, in 3D.  No $2000 3D television would be needed.

#5. Screen Stream?  More like System Stream.

If I can stream the video from the games to my controller, I’d love to be able to take that controller with me on vacation, connect to a WiFi hotspot, and play anything I have on my console at home, downloaded or in the tray.  Suddenly, the controller is a device that I would have with me all the time, more so than my 3DS.

#6. Gran Theft Auto 5, Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 3

Core games.  Not versions of core games that are downgraded to work with the console’s buyers, but actual core games.  That’s really what’s gonna sell this system anyways, not a gimmick.

#7. Forgotten Nintendo IP

I can see Pikmin 3 being a natural fit for the controller-with-a-screen.  I can also see a new, real HD Mario RPG being a terrific addition.  Eternal Darkness 2?  Yes, please.  F-Zero in HD?  OhGawdYeah.  And how about true sequels to Doshin the Giant, GiftPia, and a REAL new Starfox game?  DO IT, big N!

#8. Pokemon Online MMORPG

It’s something fans have wanted since even before the Wii was revealed.  Now, with improved online, it could become a reality. The Pokemon could even live on the controller’s screen, as the main TV was used for battlefields and travel.  This one wouldn’t even need much to be a hit, just bring on some Pocket Monsters, beat up on some friends, and join leagues. Epic.

#9. Make Your Own Mario

Little Big Planet was a great idea, and its sequel was executed terrifically.  Now, throw away all of the yarn and hay, and drop in coin blocks, turtle shells, lava pits, and plumbers.  Bam.  Mario fans have been creating their own versions of the games on the PC for decades. Think New Super Mario Bros Wii 2, but with so. much. more. This one seems like a gimme.

#10. Make it sexy.

The controller images and “photographs” of the console that we have seen aren’t very attractive.  Nintendo could sex these up, add a bit of gloss, and make them not only good video game products, but desirable VISUAL objects as well. Heck, the WiiMote is a nice-looking device, and the Wii has an iconic design already.  It works for Apple, it worked when Microsoft birthed the Xbox 360 slim, and it can work for Nintendo, too.

We know there are more things than Nintendo can do to make us happy.  Feel free to comment below on if you agree (or if you think our heads are up our asses).
