Nintendo reaffirms Star Fox Zero still arriving in April, reveals Star Fox Guard game

After an initial delay that saw the game drop out of Fall 2015 and into this year, and persistent rumors of yet another delay into later this year as well, Nintendo took to its latest Direct this week to reaffirm fans that Star Fox Zero would still be arriving on April 22 of 2016. Hey, that’s just a couple of months away! Woohoo!

With so little information about the game given to fans and press, many were wondering if there were deeper issues than just a little more polish being needed. Apparently all of the polish has been applied, and the game is set for release shortly.

With the affirmation, Nintendo also gave new details on what those changes were (including many shown to a few outlets during a press event in February). Unfortunately, motion controls are still necessary, as certain aspects of the game can only be completed with the GamePad’s gyroscope. That means that those of us hoping for a more traditional feeling Star Fox (and flight shooter) game will be forced to utilize a control scheme that may be less than preferred. The control scheme has been greeted with mixed results during previews in the past year. Essentially, aiming is done through a first-person view on the GamePad, while the TV screen will show a more traditional third person vantage.

Furthermore, the Fox amiibo will unlock a classic SNES era Arwing fighter jet for use in the game. No word on if the Falco amiibo will add to the experience.

Physical versions of the game will also include a Star Fox Guard disc, a wholly separate new game that revolves around Slippy Toad, one of the series’ popular heroes. In Guard, players will command bases run by Slippy’s uncle during attacks from robots. By viewing through the base’s different cameras, obstacles and defenses can be raised and adjusted to prevent the robots from infiltrating the bases. The game will include over 100 missions across two game modes and several enemy types. Bases can be created, uploaded and shared with other players as well.

Star Fox Zero and Star Fox Guard will arrive on April 22 as one complete pack and as two separate downloads from the Nintendo eShop.
