Microsoft reveals the guts of the Series S

Get inside the recently announced Series S

With yesterday’s reveal of the Series S now in the history books, Microsoft has opted to go all in and give a detailed look at the inside of the device and everything that makes it tick (and lowers the price point).

Here are the important stats:

  • Hardware-accelerated DirectX Raytracing and Variable Rate Shading
  • 512GB SSD
  • 40x the I/O bandwidth of an Xbox One
  • 4x processing power of Xbox One
  • 3x the GPU performance of the Xbox One
  • 1440p at 60fps
  • Support for up to 120fps
  • Spatial Sound and support for Dolby Atmos
  • “Smallest Xbox ever” form factor
  • Support for 1TB Seagate expansion storage card
  • Current gen Xbox games can be played by plugging in a USB HDD

Microsoft notes the big difference between the Series S and the Series X is the resolution. The X runs natively in 4K, and is designed to push the visual limits of gaming. For those that may not have a 4K TV set yet the S is probably the right choice. Much like the Xbox One X was a half-step to the next gen, the Series S is akin to a quarter step back from the Xbox One X, at least in terms of raw power, so that next gen games can be played but without the same fidelity and output needed.

The price difference, $299 for the S vs the $499 for the X, is considerable, but also takes into account that the S also doesn’t have a disc drive. But, with everything going digital on this box, is 512GB going to be enough space? I’ve already upgraded my OG PS4 to 1TB, and even that has been filled up with Call of Duty and Fortnite, so it’s looking like the seemingly paltry 512GB may push more folk to hop into streaming games as well — unless someone wants to drop coin on that Seagate card.

Whew. There. November 10th.
