Charticle: Who has the most exclusives? Playstation 4 and Xbox One launch lineups compared [Update]

Launch Titles Compared

[Update: Our collective thoughts seem to have delayed yet another next gen launch game, as Sony's Drive Club has been pushed back into 2014. We'll update the charts as soon as we stop reeling.]

I enjoy numbers. Numbers deal in facts, and can help us make informed decisions when they’re laid out in detail in front of us. Our last Charticle dealt with hardware numbers looking at the next generation of consoles, and showed a fairly interesting playing field with wide differences. The prices, the processors, and the accessories are all different (and impressive) and certainly people might buy the consoles for the long haul. But as we learned this past generation, sometimes hardware isn’t the most important — software is.

And it starts at launch. Exclusive games will, initially at least, separate the next generation of consoles and sway purchases one way or another. There are a ton of similarities in launch titles this time around, something we didn’t see in 2006 when the Wii and PS3 landed. And not just between the two consoles, but with the generation prior. The overlap is fairly incredible this time.

So with all of the commonality, what exactly is left for exclusives? Which console has more of them, and which has more of the ones you’d want?

We started by compiling a list of the 38 launch titles of the next gen, comparing the games of the Playstation 4 and the Xbox One. We marked which consoles are getting what games, and which of those games are coming to (or are already available) on other consoles like Wii U, Xbox 360, PS3 or PC.

Then we found a few interesting things.

As vaunted as the next generation is, there really aren’t a ton of exclusives for either side. Granted, the dreaded “launch window” could bring a lot of games, but there will be millions of gamers who won’t wait until Spring to pick up a device. A first impression is greatly important.

Titles in alphabetical order

First, we grouped together the titles that will be available on all (or many of) the consoles. There is a good chance that the largest sales of these games will still appear on current gen, given the install base. The number of games that appear on more than just the PS4 and Xbox one (together) is 21. This includes Assassin’s Creed IV, Call of Duty: Ghosts, NBA 2K14, and the much-hyped Zumba Fitness: World Party.

Games that will be on more than just next gen consoles

Games that will be on more than just next gen consoles

Yes, there will be features within these games that are inherent to the Next Gen, but they won’t necessarily change the game all that much. Many of the next gen versions of these multi-console games are launching a month to a year after the originals. In many cases, retailers and publishers are working together to allow current generation owners to upgrade their versions to the Next Gen for $10. Saved games may not come with that, though, so be ready.

That left us with 17 games. Four of those games are Playstation 4 and PC, meaning that you don’t need a new console to enjoy them if you already have a STEAM account. Those games are Blacklight Retribution, Warframe, War Thunder, and Switch Galaxy Ultra, which is coming to Vita at the same time and negating its exclusivity.

The only games left on the list are 13 games that will actually appear exclusively on Next Gen consoles. One of those, NBA Live 14, comes to both, and so it’s not exclusive to one console or the other.

That leaves 12 actual Next Gen exclusives. Twelve games that you possible can’t get on another console, and the whole reason that you’re choosing one console over the other for exclusive gaming. And here they are.

These are the games.

These are your Next Gen exclusives

The Playstation 4 has four games that are completely exclusive to the console at launch: Drive Club, Killzone: Shadowfall, Knack, and Resogun. The Xbox One has eight that are completely exclusive to it at launch: Crimson Dragon, Dead Rising 3, Fighter Within, Forza 5, Killer Instinct, Lococycle, Powerstar Golf, and Ryse.

Which of these exclusives drive you to the console of your choice? Do any of them scream “this is the reason to own Next Gen right away”?

By comparison, the Wii U had 11 exclusive launch titles last year, the Vita had 15, and the 3DS had 10.

*Feel free to correct us if you come across any errors. These are launch day, not launch window. These are also the “confirmed” titles for launch day. There are indies coming as well, but we haven’t received much info on actual launch dates.

[Side Note: Kyle and our good buds at Ars have a great breakdown as well (from August), with graphs too! Clicky clicky here]

Can you make one including all the indie and free to play games?

  2. kewlrats

Most definitely. I had trouble finding a list of the confirmed Indies launching on day one. I have some up there (Tiny Brains, Resogun, Contrast, DiveKick) but those are the only ones I know that are “confirmed”. :)

  3. The-Master

Make one for the post-launch games.

  4. Edonus

Well… we dont know all the games coming post launch. Some could be added deducted it would be a big guessing game.
Remember Last Guardian has been listed as a Ps3 coming soon game for around 5 years if not more.

I say a list showing post launch would be good but only if not done as a comparison chart but just to have an idea of what in the pipe line.

  5. Mike Sombi

    Lol @ “Ass Creed” :D

  6. Iskandar Dhul-Qarnayn

You should also take into account The Playroom for PS4.

  7. Mavsown

The Only Xbox one exclusives i would play would be dead rising 3 and Killer Instnict, but other than that, nothing else. Thats why im getting a ps4, DC Universe online, free to play, and still got call of duty, madden, and NBA.

  8. Guest

LOL. The Xbox One has the better lineup. But only low IQ paupers buy a $0N¥ PauperStation Foul anyway.

  9. Guest

Nobody cares for the $0N¥ indie crapload.

  10. Vulcanproject

Yes because you only buy a console for the games out in the first month…. People buying a PS4 will do it because it’ll have a host of exclusive and no doubt top top games over its lifespan. Allied to it most likely having the better versions of multiplatform games and being considerably cheaper than Xbox one.

  11. “Numbers deal in facts, and can help us make informed decisions” Well, yes, kinda… But not in something as subjective as video games. A movie that grossed more than another isn’t necessarily a better movie, a camera with more megapixels doesn’t immediately create better quality photos than its competitors, and the console with the most launch titles isn’t the best choice.
Numbers help not one bit with this choice, if they did then we would all be buying an Xbox. I’m getting a PS4 not for any of its launch titles – though Knack will be purchased – but for the confirmed list of upcoming titles, including those coming from the likes of Naughty Dog and Media Molocule that haven’t even been announced yet.

That said, still a nice round up, and an essential tool in helping me decide what game to get now I can’t get Watchdogs on day one!

  12. Da GeeZ

Excellent, so this sonyfanboy actually shows signs of having a brain.

Well done, you’ve just conceded that the Xbox Won has the BETTER launch lineup… thank you… this is proof positive that the sonyfanboy can actually develop some gaming reason and recognize a superior gaming lineup on the Xbox Won.

    Respect to Vulcanproject :)

  13. JimmyNice

This is a heavily skewed article… who cares if the game also exists on PC. I don’t have a gaming PC… but I am buying a new console. How about the simple fact that there are 28 games for PS4 at launch (17 of which are NOT on XB1) and 21 games at launch for XB1 of which only 10 are not on PS4 (all pulled from your chart).

I care more about that than going “aww that’s on Steam… which I don’t use and can’t access.. but since it’s on there it invalidates my console purchase”. It makes no sense.

  14. JimmyNice

There are other indies… like Ray’s the dead… but they fall into “launch window” or 1st 90 days of launch… not launch day. The article is correct on days ready day 1

  15. TristanPR77

Looks like you are trying to convince yourself. The PS4 will be the leading next gen console. Make peace with it.

  16. kreator

    Also XBL Arcade!

  17. kreator

    XBO launch lineup ftw…#FACT!

  18. .....

The exclusive’s at launch aren’t an issue for me. I’m getting Assassin’s Creed IV on ps4, Dead Rising 3 on Xbox One, and maybe Killzone Shadowfall and Ryse. Both launch lineups are weak.

  19. Stereotypical_White_Fella

Xbox Won has a better lineup and imo a better console.

  20. Geoffrey Davey

I’ll agree XBO has a slightly deeper launch line-up… but “better console” is hard to call before they both come out. Not sure what you’re basing that on.

  21. Geoffrey Davey

I’ve been saying this for months. Fan boys wanna argue, but the truth is both lineups are weak. Real next gen won’t start for another six months. Between now and then, GTAV, Dark Souls II , COD, and Black Flag will reign. None of which are exclusive… btw.

  22. RoadShow

That doesn’t even make sense. Playroom is another game for PS4 and more new games will be coming to it as well.

  23. RoadShow

Yeah free to play is huge on PS4. I think there are like 6 of them now. Top of my list is Planetside 2 and DC Universe.

  24. chris

this article completely disregards games that are exclusive between PS4 and PC. funny, considering that people were all over games like that last gen, with games like bioshock 1, mass effect, and left 4 dead calling them “xbox exclusives.”

also games are completely disregarded if they have a PS3 or Vita version? really? its still a sony exclusive and it is obviously the best version of the game by a substantial margin.

this is a clearly biased and misleading list. in reality the PS4 has far more games that are not coming to xbox one, in the launch window and beyond

  25. rudero

I go with history… of which only rules in sonys favor. I don’t want and or need three 360 games taken and ported to the xbone leaving the current system hanging dry… again.

  26. Megaman

    LOL PLAYROOM???Really???hahahahhaa

  27. Megaman

I 100% agree with you and its nice to see and unbiased Sony PS4 fan for once…I’m getting both because GBC/Games Before Consoles…But nothing at launch for the PS4 catches my Eye…I’m a big GT fan and Drive club dose not want to make me buy a PS4 just like im a big Forza fan but Forza horizon did catch my eye….yes they both look good…Knack just looks like shit….sorry…but will probably due ok in sales cause Sony fans will need something to play….Killzone would be the only game that would make me want to get a PS4 at launch but im going to wait to play it at my friends first and then decide…Online Xbox 100% coming from the 360….unless PS4 online blew me away then things will change….until then I’m only buying PS4 for there exclusives and Street fighter for online because better competition

  28. Zachary Carter

Lococycle is an arcade X360 port.

  29. Zachary Carter

Lococycle is an arcade X360 port.

  30. Bidoof

Lococyle has been rated for PC. Given that Twisted Pixel have released most of their games on PC as well it’s a safe bet that it won’t be exclusive.

  31. Guest

Love how the author includes Wii U on that list and doesn’t even include any of it’s exclusives. Same with PC

Really shows the type of agenda being pushed.

  32. TVippy

    Both lineups are bad indeed.

  33. kewlrats

    This. :)

  34. kewlrats

That was really the point of the piece. For many of us, we know what’s coming down the line and are prepared to wait it out (and wait we will). For many an average consumer, though, shopping during the holidays may be more impulse or what is available at the moment.

  35. kewlrats

Not so. I focused specifically on the PS4 and Xbone, and listed the other consoles only when there was overlap. The Wii U has arguably the most console exclusives this holiday season.

  36. kewlrats

Good catch. I hadn’t seen that.

  37. kewlrats

I had it on the list initially, but took it off due to it being preloaded onto the system. Unless that’s changed, of course.

I tried to keep it to games that players will be required to buy/download from a network in order to play.

  38. skratchy

Aaaaaaaand Drive Club was delayed. Make that 3 now.

  39. TheJAke922

    you forgot bf4….

  40. jman

the said xbox one has no minecraft???

  41. Russell Gorall

    Lococycle? Come on!

I hope the Driveclub delay rumors are false.

  42. tiger spy

You forgot Contrast on the ps4 which looks pretty interesting. I also honestly would rather play contrast over drive club, but that’s just me. Also, not that this has anything to do with the article but, all your digital downloads off the ps3 will be transferable to your ps4. Nothing major but still cool.

  43. kewlrats

Unfortunately that’s not true. Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that was misinformation. :(

    https://twitter.com/yosp/status/391545068424663040

  44. tiger spy

:( Gha that sucks! No big deal cos I’ll have my PS3 next to my PS4 but if the systems share one account name I wonder why they won’t let you download, like say Trine for example, again through the PSN onto your PS4? Jeez now I’ll never get to my digital backlog. Like that was ever gonna happen anyway. -_-!

  45. tiger spy

    Don’t forget Knack!
