Dragon Quest XII gets rebooted, now sending us Beyond Dreams

Still a long ways off for the next big DQ sequel

If you, like me, were hoping for Dragon Quest XII to be readying for release soon, it seems like we’ll be waiting a lot longer.

During a 40th anniversary livestream today, DQ 12 executive producer Yosuke Saito and series developer Yuji Horii revealed that the game has gone through significant changes in the years since first being announced. First and foremost there’s been a big reshuffling of the team, leading to a recipe of the project and adjustment of timelines. That actually allowed the team to take a step back and reassess what the game was going to be, opting to fully reboot it instead of trying to salvage what had been created so far.

That’s leading to a new focus for the game, now subtitled Beyond Dreams (from the previous The Flames of Fate), in which the Protagonist is a young man having strange dreams that can be either good dreams… or nightmares.

The developers seem to be striking a slightly more traditional, optimistic and hopeful tone for the game, and with a thematic concept similar to the world expanding of Dragon Quest VII or the dream world of Dragon Quest VI.

It’s also going to have a lot of three dimensional movement, from what was seen in the trailer.

Thankfully, the game will continue the use of the late Akira Toriyama’s characters and the great Koichi Sugiyama’s music.

And… that’s all we know. There’s no release date or platform specification yet, just a hope and a dream that we get it before, I dunno, they remake Dragon Quest I for the 5th time.
